(D) Luther: Chapter 1 [27 Apr 2007|07:56am]
CHAPTER 1

PENNY FOR YOUR THOUGHTS."

Leslie Laws found herself snapped out of a reverie and looked up to see who had spoken to her. There stood a young man wearing a hat with the visor up and a cross around his neck. He smiled at her. It took her a moment to remember who he was. But when she did she found herself smiling back, and stood.

"Damien," she greeted. "It's been a long time."

"Five years," Damien replied. "I know! But believe me, some things are worth the wait." He sat down and she did the same. "So, what brings you here? You're the last person I expected to see out this time of the year."

She gave a faint smile at that, and a forced one to boot. "I know...October isn't exactly my favorite time of year."

"Isn't that the truth." He leaned on his arms across the little table set out under the autumn sunlight and observed her for a moment. "Well? You never answered my question. Are you visiting someone?"

"I wish so," she said, looking out at the falling leaves. "Actually I was hoping I would run into you again."

Damien sat back. "Me? What for? I'm the bad-luck magnet. It just seems to follow me wherever I go." He gave a laugh that was as forced as her smile.

That made her wonder. He wasn't usually so seemingly preoccupied--at least, not five years ago. But she didn't pursue it. Instead, she said, "I know, but...Listen, I hope I'm not bothering you or anything, but I thought that maybe you could help, as you've helped before--" [Note--there's a capital L in "Listen," and no space following the ellipsis.]

"Hey, it's alright [sic]," he said, reaching across and putting his hand on her shoulder. "It's okay. I've got nothing better to do right now than help somebody out. Now tell me what's on your mind."

Leslie took a deep breath and then let it out. "Alright [sic]," she said, "it's about Scorpio."

She noted that he said nothing but looked distressed. Even more so than she had expected him to be. This worried her. "Damien? Are you alright [sic]?"

He snapped out of it and smiled to reassure her. "Yeah, yeah, just fine. It's just that...well, some things have been going on since you've been gone. Scorpio had a new addition for a while. Namely, me." [Note--events meant to be outlined in Deprogrammer--which was meant to be the last novel in the series.]

Leslie was the one to sit back now, looking stunned. Damien held up his hands again.

"It's okay," he echoed himself. "That's all over with. I don't want to worry you with the details. Anyway," stretching his arms in an attempt to appear more composed, "just what's been happening with you lately? Anything serious yet?"

She shook her head. No...They haven't tried anything yet, if that's what you mean. [Note--again no space following the ellipsis.] But I've had phonecalls. And messages left at my house. In some cases," she said, forcing another smile, "on my house."
